The number of smartphone users continues to increase at a dramatic rate. As this trend continues, people need to get smarter about how they are advertising online. Nielsen just reported that a recent survey of mobile users showed 43 percent of Americans with mobile phones are using smartphones. My husband was disappointed to discover last weekend that I had another man in my life: Roy. His jealousy couldn’t be hidden as I boasted about Roy’s intelligence and sensitivity. I rudely gushed about Roy’s sleek features and ability to anticipate my thoughts. I was spending more and more time with Roy: talking, laughing, playing games.

With music being a constant and major pulse in our lives, we have all become susceptible to the unending barrage of new artists, new songs, and the hype that comes with the hottest new single on the market. Because people love music so much, advertisers have followed suit by positioning their brands and services next to what catches people’s ears for many years now. While location apps such Foursquare and Gowalla have quickly gained popularity among the smartphone crowds - especially those super competitive smartphone users who obsess everyday about who is the mayor of their company (who would do that?) - another application called SCVNGR has been quietly creating its own niche in the location app marketplace.

With a user base quickly approaching 2 million; Foursquare is the leader in check-in based applications. It is a deadly blend of social networking and virtual collectables that a guy like me can’t resist. Sweetening the pot even further, Foursquare recently started allowing verified businesses to offer special check-in deals to Foursquare users – an option I’ve been reaping the benefits of lately (50% off my meal during World Cup matches? Yes, please!).
